Creating a Modern Oasis in Reston: The “Suburban Living” Landscape Redesign with Richardson & Associates
Situated on a distinctive wedge-shaped lot near a community park in Reston, Virginia, this landscape transformation breathes new life into a 1980s split-level home. The vision, crafted by Richardson & Associates Landscape Architecture and brought to reality by L&C Grounds Company, merges contemporary style with natural elements, redefining suburban outdoor living.
Welcoming Entry with Artistic Hardscaping and Native Plantings
The front yard captivates with its bold, geometric concrete pavers, creating a structured yet artistic pathway. Surrounded by layered ornamental grasses and anchored by a striking Japanese Black Pine, the entry combines serene beauty with visual intrigue. L&C Grounds Company meticulously selected and positioned each plant, working with local nurseries to ensure both resilience and seasonal appeal.
Connecting Spaces with Thoughtful Pathways and Garden Elements
A custom cedar pergola acts as a graceful transition between the front and backyards, guiding visitors along a gravel pathway bordered by hardy, low-maintenance plants. This pathway leads naturally to a cozy fire pit area, framed by irregularly shaped flagstone pavers that add a relaxed, welcoming feel—perfect for intimate gatherings and enjoying peaceful moments outdoors.
Gabion Wall and Layered Deck for Functionality and Style
At the back of the property, a custom-built Gabion Wall showcases a blend of blues, browns, and greens, adding texture and stability to the landscape. Opposite the wall, a two-tiered cedar deck seamlessly connects to the home’s cedar eaves, enhancing the natural warmth of the design. Nearby, a spa encased in cedar harmonizes with the surrounding flagstone pavers, creating multiple levels for relaxation and interaction with the landscape.
Native Plantings and Sustainable Rain Garden
A Cherry Laurel hedge, along with beds of evergreens, hydrangeas, ferns, and grasses, frames the views from the house, highlighting the garden’s key features. The landscape design is completed with a rain garden planted with native species to manage runoff, offering a sustainable approach that supports both the environment and aesthetic charm.
This transformation captures a fresh outlook on suburban living, blending function, beauty, and sustainability in an inspiring landscape redesign.
